FAQs: Tackling Your Questions
We get it—financial planning comes with a lot of questions. Let us help you by answering the most common ones so you can feel confident moving forward.
Do You Only Work With Mental Health Professionals?
Although we specialize in helping psychologists, therapists, and other mental health professionals, we also work with clients from all backgrounds and industries. Our expertise, collaborative style, and comprehensive planning approach apply to anyone seeking personalized financial guidance.
What Should I Bring to My First Meeting?
Just yourself! This initial conversation is a casual chat to explore what you’re looking for and determine if we’re a good fit for each other. Our goal is to add as much value as possible, and this discussion helps us understand your needs and how we can best support you.
What Services Do You Offer?
We provide comprehensive financial planning and investment management, tailored to both your personal and, if applicable, private practice/business needs. Our offerings include:
- Budgeting and cash flow
- Tax planning and preparation (in collaboration with CPAs)
- Debt management
- Insurance reviews
- Retirement and financial independence planning
- Business entity structuring and setup
- Employee benefits guidance
- And more…
Think of us as your one-stop shop for all things financial.
How Do You Get Paid?
We operate under a fee-only structure, primarily using a flat fee based on your financial complexity and the estimated work required. This typically starts at $5,000 for the first year, but may be adjusted (up or down) for your specific situation. After the first year, we reassess to keep the fee fair. We do not receive commissions from products like insurance. However, when we “shop” insurance (auto, home, life, disability, etc.) through independent agents, they may receive a commission—never us.
What Is Included in Your Fees?
Our comprehensive financial planning fee covers all financial advice related to every aspect of your personal and (if applicable) business life. This includes:
- Unlimited meetings and collaboration
- Access and collaboration with our professional network (CPAs, attorneys, etc.)
- Discounted services (e.g., estate planning)
- Independent reviews of your insurance policies to ensure proper coverage and competitive rates
- Secure online client portals for real-time account tracking
Please note, certain services come with separate fees billed by those professionals—like CPAs for tax return filing, attorneys for legal work, and any state filing fees if you’re establishing a private practice. We’ll guide you throughout the entire process to make things as seamless as possible.
Investment Management
If we directly manage your investment accounts, this fee covers all investment-related services—research, buying and selling, selection of suitable investments, and access to alternative investments not available elsewhere.
How Are You Different From Other Advisors?
- Specialization: We focus on serving psychologists and mental health professionals, understanding unique challenges like irregular income, taxes, retirement accounts, and starting a private practice.
- Holistic Approach: We integrate both personal and business finances into one cohesive plan.
- Collaborative & Warm: We believe in a judgment-free, calm environment—like talking with a trusted colleague rather than a traditional, stuffy office.
- Ongoing Support: We don’t just hand you a plan and disappear. We’re here to meet regularly and adjust your strategy as life evolves, giving as much hands-on collaboration as you need.
Where Are My Investments Held?
We partner with a reputable custodian, Charles Schwab, to securely hold your investments. We do not directly hold your funds. You’ll have your own Schwab login, and you can also track your portfolio’s performance daily through our Advyzon dashboard.
Why Should I Hire You?
If you’re looking for a partner who truly understands your unique financial challenges—and who values empathy, collaboration, and clarity—you’ve come to the right place. We strive to simplify your financial life so you can focus on what matters most to you. We’re committed to providing ongoing, hands-on support whenever you need it.
Can You Work With People in Other States?
Absolutely! We’re based in New York City, but we serve clients nationwide. We’re flexible with virtual (secure video conferencing) or in-person meetings, depending on your preference and location. Many clients appreciate the convenience of virtual appointments, especially those outside our immediate area.
What Are Your Qualifications and Credentials?
- CFP® (Certified Financial Planner): The highest standard in financial planning, covering taxes, insurance, estate planning, and retirement.
- Bachelor’s in Actuarial Science: Demonstrates advanced quantitative skills and a deep understanding of risk management.
- Years in the Industry: Over 7 years of experience helping individuals and families achieve their financial goals.
Is There a Fee for the Initial Consultation?
No. Our initial consultation is complimentary—it’s a chance for us to get to know each other, discuss your concerns, and see if our approach aligns with your needs. There’s no obligation or pressure to proceed.
How Often Will We Review My Financial Plan?
We generally recommend regular check-ins for ongoing planning and adjustments, and we schedule timely meetings around key periods like tax season or year-end planning. Some clients prefer more frequent updates, while others opt for semi-annual or annual reviews. In the early stages, you may have more meetings as we get to know your situation and implement recommendations.
What Is Expected From Me as a Client?
Your engagement and communication are crucial! We’ll guide you every step of the way, but your input helps us tailor our strategies to your life and goals. The more open you are about your personal and professional situation, the better we can adapt our recommendations. We don’t expect lightning-fast responses, but we do ask that you stay reasonably responsive so we can keep your plan moving forward.
Do You Have a Minimum Asset Level or Net Worth Requirement?
We don’t impose strict minimums. Our main requirement is that you’re committed to collaborating and open to following our guidance. We believe financial planning should be accessible to those who need it, regardless of their starting point.
Are You a Fiduciary?
Yes. As a CFP® professional, I’m held to a fiduciary standard, which means I’m legally obligated to act in your best interests at all times—providing advice that’s free from conflicts of interest and centered on your goals.
How Do You Protect My Privacy and Data?
We take confidentiality very seriously, especially given the sensitive nature of finances and the fact that many of our clients work in mental health. Our data systems are encrypted, and we only share information with professionals you’ve authorized (like a CPA or attorney). Your information is always kept secure.
Can You Help My Practice Employees With Their Financial Questions?
Yes. If you own or manage a private practice, we can offer group education sessions, one-on-one consultations, or benefit planning guidance for your team. Helping employees feel confident about their finances can boost overall satisfaction and retention.
How Do You Collaborate With My Other Professionals (CPA, Attorney, etc.)?
We often act as your financial “quarterback,” coordinating with your tax preparer, attorney, insurance agents, and others to ensure a seamless approach. We’ll handle much of the back-and-forth, so you don’t have to juggle multiple experts on your own.
Do You Offer Standalone Investment Management or Financial Planning Only?
Some clients only want help managing their investment portfolios, while others prefer a full-scale financial plan. We can tailor our services to your specific needs—whether that’s comprehensive planning, investment management, or both.
